BERWICK APPROVES 2026-27 OPERATING AND CAPITAL BUDGETS, FOCUS ON INFRASTRUCTURE
The Town of Berwick approved the 2026-27 operating and capital budgets at a special Town Council meeting on March 31, 2026. The balanced budget was approved with 1.24% increase to the residential rate and a 3.83% increase to the commercial tax rate. The Commercial Rate matches the average commercial tax rate across all Nova Scotia Towns for 2025-26. Council sought community feedback through public information sessions and roads was the number one issue. The paving budget has been increased by $150,000 to improve a section of south Commercial Street and patching on Foster Street.
We are pleased to be able to approve the budget and set our tax rate for the upcoming year. We had a very open and engaging session with the public, council workshops and public council meetings to get us to this point. Our budget commitment has been ‘Investing in Our Future’ and we are committing to major infrastructure upgrades, fixing our roads and setting aside funds for future major projects. Many thanks to staff and council for the time and effort in creating this budget.
The Town of Berwick’s Council is committed to being fiscally responsible with your tax dollars, while also balancing the needs of the community. Approximately $85,000 will be transferred to Operating Reserves, and $100,000 will support capital projects directly.
- The new residential tax rate will be $1.628 per $100 of assessment value - The commercial tax rate will be $4.070 per $100 of assessment value The highlights of the Town of Berwick’s 2026-27 budget include:
- Investment in our Wastewater Treatment Plant
- Mill and Pave of Commercial Street from Grandview Manor driveway to north of Orchard Street
- Repaving 970 ft of MacIntosh Street
- Significant patching on Foster Street and restriction of heavy vehicles such as transit buses
